Maybetherewastimeforaquickphonecall.Butwasthereaphone
somewhere?Yeah—afewhundredyardsdowntheroadinanolddeserted
gasstation.
Petehikedtothephonebooth,stillcarryingthearm.Thenheslippeda
quarterintotheslotanddialedanumber.Aftertworingsafamiliarvoice
answered.
“ThreeInvestigators,JupiterJonesspeaking.”
“Jupe,it’sPete.I’vebeentryingtocallyouallmorning.”
“Iknow,”Jupitersaid.
Iknow.ThosewereJupiterJones’stwofavoritewords.
“Howcanyoupossiblyknow?”Peteasked.“Youforgottoturnonthe
answeringmachineandI’vebeengettingnoanswerallmorning.”
“Ididn’tforget.TheansweringmachineisfriedbecauseIblewoutall
thefusesintheworkshop.It’sdefinitelytimetoconverttocircuitbreakers,”
Jupeanswered.“Andbesides?IknowbecauseIcanlogicallydeducewhat
happened.You’relate,sosomethingimportantmusthavecomeup.”
PetecouldpictureJupeperfectly—sittingatanoldmetalocedeskin

oce.ThetrailersatnearthecornerofJupe’suncle’sjunkyardinRocky
Beach,California,justupthecoastfromLosAngeles.Jupewasprobably
leaningbackintheswivelchair,workingathiscomputer—ormaybereading
adietbook.
“Okay,you’reright,asusual.Somethingdidcomeup.Butit’snotjust
important—it’smonumental.GuesswhereIam?”Peteasked.Buthe
didn’tgiveJupeachancetoanswer,justincasesomehowhecould.“I’m
atDaltonCemeterydownnearHuntingtonBeach,andI’vegotthespecial-
eectsarmmydadhasbeenworkingonforthenewSuocationmovie—
TheSuocationII.”
“Hmmm,”Jupitersaid.
“AndI’mtakingthearmtoJonTravis,thedirector,inabouttwomin-
utes.Andnotonlythat,mydadthinksTravismayevengivemeajob.Is
thiscoolorwhat?”
“It’scool,butbecareful,”Jupitersaid.
“What’sthatsupposedtomean?”
“ItmeansalotofstrangethingshappenedonthefirstSuocationmovie.”
“Likewhat?”Peteasked.
ButbeforeJupitercouldanswer,Pete’squarterdroppeddownintothe
telephone.
“Talktoyoulater,”Jupitersaid.“Iknowyoudon’thaveanotherquar-
ter.”Jupehungup.
Okay.Theguy’ssmart.I’llgiveyouthat,Petetoldhimselfashewalked
backtothecemetery.Otherwisehewouldn’tbetheleaderofTheThree
Investigators.Buthow’dheknowIdidn’thaveanymorechange?Andwhat
didhemean,strangethingshappenedonthefirstSuocationfilm?
Petecrossedtheroadandwalkeddownagrassyslopeintothecemetery.
Whenhewasakid,grave-yardsusedtofreakhimout.Butnotnow,and
notthisone.Thisonewascrawlingwithlife.
Atthebottomofthefirstslopetherewasalevelplaceclutteredwith
gravestones.Thenthehillslopeddownagain,andthecemeterycontinued
down,downtothebottomofadeepvalley.Thefilmcrewwassetupat
theverybottom.Smallgroupsofspectatorslinedthecrestsofthehills
overlookingtheactionbelow.
Ashepassedthroughthecrowdofonlookers,Petesawtwohighschool
girlswholookedasiftheywereabouthisage—seventeen.Oneofthemwas
watchingthefilmcrewthroughbinoculars.“Whataretheydoingnow?”the
othergirlasked.
“They’restilldiggingagraveandjusttalking,”answeredthegirlwith
thebinoculars.
